Clinical At Morehead STEM Academy
Nathaniel Alexander Elementary School is where I had my second clinical. There, I got some first hand experience as to what it was like to teach kindergartners. Ms. Merriweather, the teacher was observing, asked me to assist her in her class and I obliged. She had me guide some of her students through several worksheets. Although I never intended to work with students quite that young, it was still an enlightening experience. Through observation, I learned of many different ways to deal with kids. I also learned through hands-on doing the mannerisms and thought processes of students of that age.
A Past Teacher
Growing up, I was kind of the black sheep of the family. the family around me got consistent A's in classes and had direction and preparation. I got mostly A's with the occasion B and didn't have much of a plan for the future. As such, I was often compared to my cousins, and grew acclimated to being held to a slightly lower standard. During my junior year of high school, my English teacher completely changed the way I viewed myself. After our first assignment, he told me that I had an undeniable talent for writing. I still don't consider myself to be great at writing, but this compliment meant so much to me. No one had ever told me I was good at school before, so to receive such high praise from someone, especially a teacher, was surprising. This is one of the main reasons I want to be a teacher; to be that person for someone else. If I am able to plant some seed of belief in the hearts of my students and watch them blossom into a confident and learned individual, it would all be worth it.
